Central Coast Ocean Monitoring

Oceanographic monitoring at the land-sea interface on the Central Coast of British Columbia

The Hakai Institute Calvert field station is ideally positioned to monitor the full range of oceanographic environments encountered on the Central Coast of British Columbia. The comparatively sheltered waters of Kwakshua and Meay channels allow reliable daily sampling at Pruth Station, keeping a finger on the pulse of the region. Overlaid on top of this daily monitoring is a fortnightly sampling program that spans sheltered inlets and tidal flats, the deep mainland fjord Rivers Inlet, the islands of the inside passage, and the exposed outer coast Queen Charlotte Sound. Through long-term, high temporal resolution monitoring Hakai Institute aims to understand the interaction of Central Coast marine environments and ecosystems with climate, large scale oceanography, and terrestrial biomes.
