Brian is a biological oceanographer with broad interests in the structure and function of pelagic marine ecosystems, and their response to climate forcing and anthropogenic impacts. His research focuses on the plankton that form the base of all pelagic food webs, and extends into the higher trophic levels through research into bottom-up and top-down forcing processes. In a search for unifying concepts of lower trophic level dynamics which can inform our understanding of the food web response to perturbation, his research has been wide ranging, from the polar regions to the tropics, and from high seas to coastal realms.
