Our Wolves

Our favorite co-inhabitants of Calvert Island are the wolves. These are the kind of wolves known to us through the wonderful work of Ian McAllister, Chris Darimont and others, now celebrated in the recently published book The Last Wild Wolves.

In fact, Chris Darimont several years ago took the celebrated photo of the wolf we use for inspiration on our website banner (with his kind permission) on our very own West Beach.

Our wolves leave tracks on the beaches all year round; they often howl at night and in the early morning; and often pay us a visits, particularly in winter.

We have several automated wolf-cams set up now, so we are beginning a systematic inventory of our visitors. Here are some pictures from the spring and summer of 2011:

Ditto.

Diversity of colors and builds.

Grrrr. Well, it is a rainforest after all.

Early morning at the beach.
