Sea Kayaking at Hakai Beach

Here is a review of kayaking in the Hakai area from Wavelength magazine.

Skills Training

Designed for people who are either beginners, or who want to upgrade their skills so that they can take part in more ambitious excursions or expeditions. The natural opportunities at Hakai are the best in the world. A beginners area in Pruth Bay; graded challenges as you move outward from the lodge, down the channels, and toward greater and greater exposure to challenging ocean conditions and navigational tasks. The West Beach, which is accessible by portage from the lodge, offers great opportunities for safely practicing surf launches and landings.

Day Excursions from Our Site

Kwakshua Channel is a perfect venue for beginners. The channel is calm, protected, with shoreline always close by and accessible. A trip out to Fitzhugh Sound and back is a great way to work on your strokes and conditioning.

Next, take the side channel north to Hakai Pass and explore Donald and the other islands. Depending on sea conditions and your confidence, explore futher.

Next, head out past Donald, past Hakai Land & Sea and the sandspit, and see if you can make it to our North Beach. Most days it is sheltered enough that a beach landing will be possible.

Finally, if you have a good day for it and an experienced guide, venture past the North Beach, out around the headland into the open Pacific. Avoiding the boomers, make your way into a surf landing on the West Beach and portage your kayak back to the lodge.
